Gunungan, the celestial mountain, represents the “creative breath” of the universe. My personal quest for mental and emotional purity inspired me to begin work on the Gunungan painting collection.
Gunungan is a prop from the shadow puppet theater of wayang kulit, used to mark a change in the performance, to hint at drama, or to introduce a dominant element in the story.
The mountain symbol reflects the boundless potential of creation and the idea of the created as a seed of infinity. The endless, relentless cycle of creation and destruction is clearly depicted in the paintings as the continuous rolling of the cosmic creative nerve.
The depth of pure color, gold pigment, precise drawing details, and meditative perfection dominate the creative spirit of each painting, powerfully emphasizing the high-frequency range of this opus, which currently consists of 15 medium-format paintings.
